William Wu Profile

William Wu was born on September 26, 1993, in Sydney, Australia and that’s where completed his early education at the Sydney Grammar School on a full scholarship. Wu is currently based in Hong Kong where he is running the Catheon Gaming project, along with a few others.

Wu attended the Sydney Grammar School from 2006 to 2011, after which he moved on to the University of New South Wales, one of Australia’s leading research and teaching universities. There, Wu completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Business Economics.

After moving on from the UNSW, William went to The London School of Economics and Political Science. At the LSE, Wu got his Master of Science in Finance and Private Equity in 2015.

From 2020 to 2022, Wu attended The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. At Wharton, William obtained a Master of Business Administration. 

He also completed several exchange programs, at the University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

In 2015, after completing his Masters’s at LSE, Wu interned at the UN for a few months and worked as an investment banking summer analyst at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Senior Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company

However, William got his actual start at McKinsey & Company in September 2015 as a Senior Business Analyst. He stayed there for almost two years, working on operational improvement projects and value creation transformation. He also consulted on matters of corporate finance for more than 10 large corporations and governments. 

Not only that but at McKinsey & Company, Wu also had the opportunity to work on a project that included a $1 billion restructuring for a blue-chip mining company. He also helped provide an M&A strategy for a $4 billion service provider and created a market entry strategy for a renewable energy company from Africa. At McKinsey & Company, William received the highest-tier distinctive ranking.

Vice President at Oaktree Capital Management

Oaktree Capital Management is a global leader among investment managers, and they specialize in alternative investments. Oaktree Capital Management is also where Wu moved on from McKinsey & Company.

From August 2017 to October 2021, William served as Vice President at Oaktree Capital Management. During his time at Oaktree, Wu focused on investing in opportunistic special situations and private equity opportunities. These opportunities were all across the industrial, fintech, and retail enterprises in Hong Kong, as well as Australia.

At Oaktree Capital Management, William also gained invaluable insight and experience in business turnaround, as well as valuation improvement across portfolio companies. These included growing an organization’s EBITDA by over three times in three years. He also carried out a roll-acquisition strategy and an IPO to achieve an IRR of around 50%.
